Disabling the automatic
mail checking function in your mail

If you need to leave your mail
program open when you are not connected to the Internet for any reason,
you will probably want to turn off the automatic mail checking feature.
Otherwise, your mail program will either cause your modem to dial and reconnect
, or it will keep giving you error messages at regular intervals. To disable
mail checking:
Microsoft Outlook Express:
Click on Tools and select
Options.
On the General tab, uncheck
the box labeled "Check for new messages every [x] minute(s)."
Click OK.
Microsoft Internet
Mail:
Click on Mail and select
Options.
Click the Read tab.
Uncheck the box labeled
"Check for new messages every [x] minute(s)."
Click OK.
Netscape Messenger
4.5 or later:
Click on Edit and select
Preferences.
Click on the plus sign next
to Mail & Newsgroups.
Click on Mail Servers.
Highlight the incoming mail
server name and click the Edit button.
Uncheck the box labeled
"Check for mail every [x] minutes."
Click OK and then OK again.
Netscape Messenger
4.08 or earlier:
Click on Edit and select
Preferences.
Click on the plus sign next
to Mail & Groups.
Click on Mail Servers.
Click the More Options...
button near the bottom of the window.
Uncheck the box labeled
"Check for mail every [x] minutes."
Click OK and then OK again.
Netscape Mail:
Click Options and select
Mail and News Preferences.
Click the Server tab.
In the Check for Mail: section,
if "Every: [x] minutes" is selected, click the radio button next to "Never"
instead.
Click OK.
Eudora Light or Pro:
Click on Tools and select
Options (on a Mac, click on Special and select Settings instead).
Click on Checking Mail.
In the "Check for mail every
[x] minutes" section, change the number of minutes to 0.
Click OK.
