The file that is sent to the browser is only a plain text file. But, it can contain special instructions that cause the browser to format the text in special ways, such as adding colors, using different fonts, positioning the text in certain places on the screen, etc. Additionally, it can contain instructions that refer to other files, particularly pictures, which the browser then requests from the web server and displays on the screen as part of the page.
